May Death Be A Choice?

Brittany Maynard will die November 1, 2014. She will die of her own choice, but not of her own hand. She has moved from California to Oregon where assisted suicide is legal,  but does legality make it justifiable? We speak of justifiable homicide, can there be justifiable suicide? Is assisted suicide somehow more dignified, more pristine, cleaner, loaded with less stigma and tragedy than unassisted suicide? I believe we are the captains of our own souls, but do our lives belong to us or are they a gift? We did not create our life, is it ours to end? I ask this yet also sense the loss, the despondency, that may come with a medically hopeless situation, a pain or horror that is too dark to face. Life is precious, too precious to be ended without grave consideration. Our own ideas of transcendent meaning must also be gravely considered. Do we live the fate we're dealt to its bitter conclusion, or is it merciful and humane to preempt that fate and grant that option to others? And does "legality" ultimately make any difference other than on the temporal level? It is a question of the soul answerable only by God.http://www.cbsnews.com/videos/dying-woman-rekindles-national-right-to-die-debate/
